The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Tensile Fracture

Fracture in a wire that is caused by tension exceeding the ultimate tensile strength of the material.

Tensile Set

The condition when a plastic material shows permanent deformation caused by a stress, after the stress is removed. This term is the same as Tension Set, but it is known under this heading in the rubber industry, where this is one of the tests for level of cure.

Tensile Strength

The greatest longitudinal force that a material can bear without tearing apart or rupturing. Also called Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS). It is the maximum tensile load that can be applied to a tensile test specimen beyond which further stretching of the specimen is accompanied by a decrease in the load.

Tensile Stress

Force per unit of cross-sectional area applied to elongate a material.

Tensile Test

Measuring the tensile strength of a material to determine the maximum load the material will satisfactorily withstand prior to fracture. It is performed by increasing a pulling force on one end of the sample, while holding the other end stationary until there is a distortion or rupture. The tensional strength is expressed in newtons.

Tension Break

A facture caused by tension that exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of a material. This can be seen when wire is “necked down,” and a small cup-cone is visible at the break. However, this could also indicate a central burst failure that requires different corrective action.

Tension Meter

A meter used to measure and test the tension in all types of wire, yarn, tape and film during production processing and winding.

Tension Ratio

Used to evaluate the tension of the product before and after a capstan load to determine the direction and amount of slippage.

Tension Regulator

Device used to control tension during the manufacture or handling of wire or cable. It is used primarily to control tension of cable being wound on to a reel or between sheaves in a coordinated drive system.

Tension Set

The condition when a plastic material shows permanent deformation caused by a stress, after the stress is removed. This term covers applications from pre-stressed steel strand to overhead transmission cables, etc.

Tension Spring

A helical spring designed to increase in length on application of load.

Tension, Final Unloaded Conductor

The tension after the conductor has been stretched for an appreciable time by loads simulating ice and wind.

Tension, Initial Conductor

The tension prior to any external load.

Tension, Working

The tension that should be used for a portable cable on a power reel. It should not exceed 10 percent of the cable breaking strength.

Tensionometer

Device used to measure surface tensions of liquids for their wetting capability.

Terminal

1) A metal wire termination point that is designed to handle one or more conductors, and to be attached to a board bus or block with mechanical fasteners or clips, or bare wire ends. Basic types include ring tongue, spade, flag, hook, blade, quick connect, offset and flanged. Special types include taper pin, taper tab and others, either insulated or non-insulated. 2) Facility at which information is gathered and disseminated within a communications network.

Terminating Cable

A multi-paired cable used in the telephone (communications) exchange for connecting the outside cable to the main distributing frame. Sometimes referred to as Tip Cable. It is a special cable primarily intended and designed for terminating area cables on protective frames in central offices where sealed chamber terminals are not required. The cable insulation in these cases is usually plastic, pulp and paper ribbon insulated.

Termination

1) The connection of a cable. 2) The preparation of a shielded cable for connection. 3) A location where wires are connected to a variety of terminals.

Ternary Alloy

An alloy that contains three principal elements.

Terrazzo Strip

A formed product with special flatness and straightness requirements made from strip or extruded sections for use as dividing strips in terrazzo floors.
