The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Tapping

1) The act of draining molten metal from furnace to ladle. 2) Cutting a screw thread into a hole in a surface.

Tarnish

Surface discoloration of a metal caused by formation of a thin film of corrosion product usually due to exposure to the atmosphere.

TAS

Designation for shielded thermoplastic appliance wire.

Taylor Process

A process for drawing very fine wire particularly from non-ductile metals, in which the molten metal is cast into a glass or quartz tube and then drawn down after heating both to a temperature at which the glass or quartz melts.

TB

Designation for Terminal Block.

TBS

Designation for thermoplastic insulation and fibrous outer braid, 90°C (194°F) switchboard wire.

TBWE

Designation for switchboard wire, weatherproof saturated, no voltage rating.

TBWP

Designation for switchboard wire, weatherproof saturated, no voltage rating.

TC

Designation for tinned copper.

TCC

Designation for triple cotton covered.

TCR

Designation for Temperature Coefficient of Resistance. This can be used to evaluate the change in the resistance of a coil of wire as the temperature of the coil is varied. It is the change in resistance of a given conductor resulting from a one-degree change in temperature of a reference temperature, divided by the conductor’s resistance at that reference temperature.

TDR

Designation for: 1) Time Delay Relay. 2) Time Domain Reflector, pulse-echo (radar) testing of cables. With this test, a signal travels through cable until impedance discontinuity is encountered, then part of signal is reflected back. The distance to fault can be estimated, which makes this method useful for finding faults, broken shields or conductors.

Tear Strength

The force required to continue a tear in a material under specified conditions.

Tear Test

Determination of the tear strength of various materials.

Technical Appeal Board of UL

An independent group to recommend solutions to technical differences between members of the UL and their clients.

Teeming

Pouring metal into ingot molds. See Pouring.

Teflon®

DuPont’s company trade name for fluorocarbon resins. FEP, PFA and TFE are typical materials.

Teflon® Impregnated

The saturation of heat-resistant fibrous glass braid with Teflon® suspensoid. After saturation the Teflon is cured.

Tefzel®

DuPont’s trade name for a fluorocarbon material typically used as a wire wrap insulation.

Telecommunications

The communication of information over some distance, including inter-building and intra-building distances.
