The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Synchronism

When connected AC systems, machines or a combination operate at the same frequency and when the phase angle displacements between voltages in them are constant, or vary about a steady and stable average value.

Synchronous Machine

A machine in which the average speed of normal operation is exactly proportional to the frequency of the system to which it is connected.

Synchronous Speed

The speed of rotation of the magnetic flux produced by linking the primary winding. An AC induction motor is designed with a certain number of poles that determine its speed when connected to power of a specific frequency. For example, a four-pole motor run on 60-hertz power has a synchronous speed of 1800 RPM. In actual use, the motor will run at a slightly lower speed, typically around 1725 RPM, due to the slip characteristic of the motor.

Synchrotron

A device for accelerating charged particles to high energies in a vacuum. The particles are guided by a changing magnetic field while they are accelerated in a closed path.

Synthetic Diamond

Man-made diamonds used to manufacture wiredrawing dies.

Synthetic Solution

Wiredrawing lubricants that are formulated with man-made ingredients and without any natural mineral or animal fats.

T

Designation for Thermoplastic PVC, building wire, 60°C (140°F).

T Wire

Designation for a type of non-metallic sheathed building wire used in houses.

T-Carrier

For AT&T, a hierarchy of digital systems designed to carry speech and other signals in digital form, designated T1, T2 and T4. A T1 carrier has 24 PCM voice channels.

T/d Cu

Designation for tungsten copper (electric wire).

T1

A common carrier circuit leased (private line facility) which is the standard method of interconnecting digital communications systems in North America. The line operates at a rate of 1.544M bps. With DS-1 signaling, the facility provides twenty-four 64 Kbp.

TA

Designation for switchboard wire, insulated wire, thermoplastic and felted asbestos, 90°C (194°F).

TAA

Designation for flexible nickel or nickel-clad copper, PTTE tape, felted asbestos, asbestos braid, 200°C (392°F).

Tachometer

An instrument for measuring the speed of a shaft or machine in revolutions per minute.

Tainton Process

See Bethanizing Process.

Take-Off Stand

Used where it is required to unwind wire from a reel. A key for this is that the equipment be able to apply the requisite tensions.

Take-up

1) The process of accumulating wire or cable onto a reel, bobbin or some other type of pack. 2) The device for pulling wire or cable through a piece of equipment or machine and winding the finished product at the collection point onto a spool that is controlled for sufficient torque. See Spooler.

Tallow Soap

A paste lubricant used for rod drawing applications.

Talurit Swaging Process

A method of forming eyes in wire ropes by threading the rope through an aluminum ferrule, and then placing both the rope and the ferrule in a swager that is fitted with the appropriate Talurit swaging dies. The correct hydraulic pressure is then applied and the ferrule and rope are formed into a loop eye.

Tan Delta

See Dissipation Factor.
