The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

EVA

Designation for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate.

EX

Designation for thermocouple cable.

Exact Lengths, Ends Taken

Exact lengths together with the shorter lengths resulting from the cutting to length operation; sometimes called exact lengths and shorts.

Exchange Cable

Cables used in communication distribution networks between service drops and individual subscribers.

Excitation Losses

Losses in transformer or electrical machine because of voltage.

Excite

To initiate or develop a magnetic field.

Exogenous Oxygen Pick Up

The phrase used where oxygen is allowed to enter the product (rod) during a continuous casting operation.

Exothermic

A process where there is a release of heat, as opposed to an endothermic process, where there is an absorption of heat.

Exothermic Gas

Produced by burning fuel gas and cooling to remove the majority of the water vapor by condensation. Exothermic gas is generally termed rich or lean depending on the fuel-to-oxygen ratio of the mixture.

Exothermic Weld

A molecular permanent bond between two metals brought about by a controlled heat reaction.

Expanded PVC

See Foamed Plastic.

Expansion, Thermal

The fractional change in unit size per unit temperature change.

Expendable Thermocouple

See Thermocouple, Expendable.

Extender

A substance added to a plastic composition to reduce the amount of the primary resin required per unit volume.

Extensometer

An instrument for measuring the elongation of a test specimen during the operation of straining.

External Interference

The effect of any electrical waves or fields that cause sounds other than the desired signal. Static.

External Wiring

Category of electronic wiring which interconnects various subsystems within the weapons system. It is frequently subjected to severe environments. See Internal Wiring.

Extra Best Wire

A term for steel wire of lowest electrical resistance.

Extraction

The transfer of material from a substance to a liquid in contact with the substance.

Extractors

In the extrusion process, what is generally known as a run-out table since during extrusion the product’s feed increases drastically.
