The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Radial Feeder

A feeder connected to a single source.

Radial Lead

A lead extending out the side of a compartment rather than from the end. See Axial Lead.

Radian

A supplementary SI unit for plane angles; the plane angle with its vertex at the center of a circle that is subtended by an arc equal in length to the radius. Many equations involving wiredrawing use this unit instead of angles.

Radiant Energy

Energy traveling in the form of electromagnetic waves.

Radiant Heater Wire

Type of wire wrapped around a core for heating elements. Also called Mullion Wire and Resistance Wire.

Radiant Tube Furnace

See Furnace, Radiant Tube.

Radiation Crosslinking

A common technique to crosslink polymeric material. The crosslinking is performed by passing the wire or cable through a beam of electron radiation. Wire or cable is usually festooned on a series of pulleys and passed through the beam several times until the desired dosage is reached.

Radio

Refers to the use of electromagnetic waves between 10 kHz and 3 GHz and their transmission through space.

Radio Frequency

The frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum that are used for radio communications.

Radius, Bending

The radii around which cables are pulled.

Radius, Training

The radii to which cables are bent by hand positioning.

Rainbow Cable

Two or more insulated conductors of different colors bonded into two flat parallel configurations.

Raintight

Designed so that exposure to even a beating rain will not result in water penetration.

Ram Extrusion

A type of extrusion in which a hydraulic ram in a closely fitted cylinder forces a billet of insulating material through an affixed head and a die and around the conductor as it is passed through the die. This is a common extrusion technique required for some insulating materials.

Ram, Oleohydraulic

Technique of shifting stands during a rolling operation. This is when stands must be rearranged to adjust a roll product schedule.

Random Length

Run-of-mill lengths without any indicated preferred length.

Random Winding

A winding in rotating equipment wherein the wires do not lie in an even pattern.

Rape Seed Oil

Used in wiredrawing. Obtained from the seed of a rape plant, which is related to the turnip.

Rated

A designation that indicates the limits of operating characteristics for application under specified conditions.

Rated Temperature

The maximum temperature at which an electric component can operate for extended periods without loss of its basic properties.
