The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Printing Wheels

See Marking, Printing Wheels.

Process

Path or steps used in an operation to achieve the desired end results.

Process Annealing

In the wire industry, it is a process by which a ferrous alloy is heated to a temperature close to, but below the lower limit of the transformation range and is subsequently cooled. This process is applied in order to soften the alloy for further cold working.

Process Metallurgy

The science of obtaining metals from their ores.

Profile Wire Rolling Equipment

A frame holding four (sometimes three) un-driven rollers between which wire is drawn for production of square, rectangular and a wide variety of special shapes. See Turks Head.

Profilometer

An instrument for determining the profile or roughness of a material’s surface (e.g., the bore of wiredrawing dies. It consists of a feeler arm reflecting any up and down movement of the feeler that can then be translated into the required outline of the die profile. Also, used to measure the depth of surface defects, such as pits, on bar and wire. It is a highly accurate tool for laboratory use, usually accurate to 0.0025 mm.

Profiloscope

An instrument for measuring die angles and inspecting bore condition of wiredrawing and extrusion dies.

Programmed Wiring

Method by which conductors are attached to a multicontact termination panel by a programmable machine. Applicable to highly dense wiring and high production quantities. Wire attachment is by automatically wrapping the wire around a solid, square or rectangular terminal.

Programming

1) Ability to select various circuit patterns by interconnecting or “jumping” appropriate contacts on one side of a connector plug or panel. 2) Planning a computer program.

Progressive Die

A forming equipment setup in which two or more sequential operations are performed at two or more positions, where the work piece is being moved from station to station.

Projection Welding

See Welding, Projection.

Proof Stress

In a test, stress that will cause a specified permanent deformation in a material, usually 0.01 percent or less. The stress that may be applied without leaving permanent elongation of more than 0.001 inch per inch of the specimen’s original length after removal of that stress. Expressed in psi.

Proof Test

Any type of test to indicate that the material or structure is suitable for the purpose intended.

Propagation

The travel of waves through or along a medium.

Propagation Constant

A complex quantity characteristic of a radio frequency transmission line that indicates the effect of the line on the transmitted wave. The real part indicates the attenuation and the imaginary part the phase shift.

Propagation Delay

Time required for a signal to pass from the input to the output of a device. Usually measured in nano-seconds per foot of cable.

Propagation Time

Time required for an electrical wave to travel between two points on a transmission line.

Property

A characteristic that can be observed.

Properzi Process

A manufacturing process to produce nonferrous rod or narrow strip by using a grooved wheel and flexible steel belt that continuously casts a bar in the outer periphery of the rotating casting wheel and has a follow-up rolling mill to produce the final shape. The Properzi Process was developed by Italy’s Ilario Properzi. See Continuous Casting, Cast and Roll.

Proportional Counter

Gas-filled radiation detection tube in which the pulse produced is proportional to the number of ions formed in the gas by the primary ionizing particle.
