The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Ground Plane

Expanded copper mesh that is laminated into some flat cable construction as a shield.

Ground Potential

Zero potential with respect to ground or earth.

Ground Power Cable

A cable assembly fitted with appropriate terminations to supply power to an aircraft from ground power unit.

Ground Return

When the earth is used as part of the return circuit.

Ground Rod

A metal rod driven into the earth for connection to the electrical system.

Ground Sheave

Sheave used in the final heating operation of the annealer when the product is re-heated.

Ground Support Cable

Cable construction, usually rugged and heavy, for use in ground support control or power systems.

Ground Wire

A conductor leading from equipment to an electrical connection with the ground.

Grounded

Connected to earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the earth.

Grounded Conductor

A conductor connected to the system ground, such as a neutral conductor in a standard single-phase AC circuit.

Grounded Neutral

The neutral wire is metallically connected to earth.

Grounding

The device or conductor connected to ground designed to conduct only in abnormal conditions.

Grounding Bushing

Attaches a ground wire to a conduit.

Grounding Conductor

A conductor that connects non-current-carrying metal parts of equipment or the grounded circuit conductor to a grounding electrode.

Group Ambient Temperature

The no-load temperature of a cable group with all other cables or ducts loaded.

GSIA

Designation for Galvanized Steel Interlocked Armor.

GTO

Designation for gas tube sign and oil-burner ignition cable.

Guard

1) A conductor designed to conduct interference to its source and prevent its influence upon the desired signal. 2) A mechanical barrier against contact.

Guider

1) The adjustable part of the mold of an extruder. See Die. 2) The tooling in the head of an extruder that guides the core into the center of the insulation material as it is extruded.

Guillotine Shear

A shear the upper knife or blade of which moves downward like the French guillotine. It is sometimes called a gate shear.
