The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Cable, Butt

See Cable, Hand.

Cable, Coaxial

A cable used for high frequency, consisting of two cylindrical conductors with a common axis separated by a dielectric; normally the outer conductor is operated at ground potential for shielding.

Cable, Duplex

A twisted pair of cables.

Cable, Electric

A length of single insulated conductor (solid or stranded) or two or more such conductors each provided with its own insulation that are laid up together. The insulated conductor(s) may or may not be provided with an overall mechanical protective covering.

Cable, Gangway

A mine power feeder cable.

Cable, Hand

A mining cable used to connect equipment to a reel truck.

Cable, Head

See Cable, Hand.

Cable, Oil-Filled

See Oil-Filled Cable.

Cable, Parkway

Designed for direct burial with heavy mechanical protection of jute, lead and steel wires.

Cable, Portable

A cable used to transmit power to mobile equipment.

Cable, Power

A cable used to supply current (power).

Cable, Pressure

A cable having a pressurized fluid (gas or oil) as part of the insulation. Paper and oil are the most common fluids.

Cable, Ribbon

A flat multiconductor cable.

Cable, Service Drop

The cable from the utility line to the customer’s property.

Cable, Signal

Used to transmit data.

Cable, Spacer

An aerial distribution cable made of covered conductors held by insulated spacers. Designed for wooded areas.

Cable, Star Quad

A multi-core radio or television relay cable in which the conductors are arranged in quads and each quad consists of four conductors twisted together, the diagonally opposite conductors constituting a pair circuit. Also known as spiral four cable.

Cable, Submarine

Designed for crossing under navigable bodies of water, this type of cable provides mechanical protection from anchors, floating debris and moisture.

Cable, Triplexed

Helical assembly of three insulated conductors and sometimes a bare grounding conductor.

Cable, Unit

A cable having pairs of cables stranded into groups (units) of a given quantity. These groups then form the core.
