The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Voltage Regulator

A device to maintain voltage levels in a circuit.

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio

The ratio of the maximum effective voltage to the minimum effective voltage measured along the length of a mismatched radio frequency transmission line.

Voltage Stress

That stress found within a material when subjected to an electrical charge.

Voltage To Ground

The voltage between an energized conductor and earth.

Voltage Tolerance

The level of voltage exceeding the specification that can be tolerated by the cable. For example, the over-voltage tolerance of a cable shall not exceed rated voltage by more than 5 percent continuously, nor 10 percent during emergency periods of 15 minutes or less.

Voltage Withstand Test

A field or factory test in which a conductor is subjected to a higher than normal AC or DC voltage.

Voltage, Arc-Over

See Voltage Breakdown Test.

Voltage, Corona Extinction

The minimum voltage that sustains a corona. This is determined by applying a corona-producing voltage, then decreasing the voltage until the corona is extinct.

Voltage, EHV

Voltage that is of a level from 230-765 kV.

Voltage, Induced

A voltage produced in a conductor by a change in magnetic flux linking that path.

Voltage, Low

A voltage drop between the transmitting and receiving ends of a feeder, main, or service below that required for proper operation of the load or device.

Voltage, Signal

Voltages to 50V. The voltage at which signals rather than power is transmitted through a wire or cable.

Voltage, UHV

Voltage that is of a level from 765+ kV.

Voltmeter

An instrument for measuring voltage.

Volume Constancy

A basic characteristic of plastic deformation where the volume remains constant during the deformation.

Volume Resistivity

The electrical resistance between opposite faces of a 1-cm cube of insulating material, commonly expressed in ohm-centimeters. Also called specific insulation resistance.

Volute Spring

A tapered spring coiled from rectangular section material, with the successive coils overlapping. Also, see Double Volute Spring.

VOM

A commonly used electrical test instrument to test voltage, current, resistance and continuity.

VPN

Vickers pyramid numeral, more usually known as diamond pyramid hardness number (DPN). It is the ratio between the force or applied load in kg and the resulting surface area of indentation in sq mm. See Diamond Pyramid Hardness Test.

VR Cables

Vulcanized rubber cable. These cables are usually specified where a high degree of flexibility is desired.
