The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Automotive Battery Cable

Low voltage (60 volts or less) single cable for automotive applications that is 6 AWG (13 mm2) or larger. Resistant to oil and weather.

Automotive Primary Cable

Low voltage (60 volts or less) single or multi-conductor cable for automotive applications that is less than 6 AWG (13 mm2). Resistant to oil and weather.

Automotive Primary Wire

Low voltage single or multi-conductor wire for automotive applications. Resistant to oil and weather.

Automotive Secondary Cable

High voltage single conductor cable that connects the ignition coil and distributor with the spark plugs of the engine in automotive applications.

Automotive Wire and Cable

Wire that normally falls in one of three classifications: battery cable, primary wire or secondary wire or ignition cable. Battery cables may be from 6 AWG to 4/0. Primary wire refers to all the wire between the battery and the primary side of the ignition coil. Ignition cables (secondary wiring) connect the ignition coil and distributor with the spark plugs of the engine.

Autothermal Extrusion

An extrusion process in which the only source of heat is that generated through mechanical working by the screw.

Autotransformer

See Transformer, Auto.

AV

Designation for asbestos and varnished cambric insulated power and control cables.

AVA

Designation for impregnated asbestos and varnished cambric insulated wire with asbestos or glass braid, 600V, 110°C.

AVB

Same as AVA except lead sheath in cotton braid and 90°C.

AVC

Designation for asbestos and varnished cambric insulated power and control cables.

AVL

Same as AVA except lead sheath in place of braid.

AVPD

Designation for asbestos and varnished cambric insulated cord with asbestos braid, two or three conductors. Heat and moisture resisting, flame retarding. For damp locations. 600V, 100°C. Round construction.

AVPO

Same as AVPD except two-conductor flat construction.

AWG

See American Wire Gauge.

AWM

Designation for Appliance Wiring Material, a conductor used for electrical connections inside electrical equipment.

Axial Lead

A wire coming out from the end along the axis of a component.

AZ

Designation for a thin coating of some metal part (usually steel or iron) with aluminum by electroplating.

Babbitt Metal

A class of silver-white bearing metals (“white metals”) that is useful for their anti-friction properties. First produced by Isaac Babbitt in 1839, these alloys are most often made from copper, tin and antimony with small additions of other metals. A typical application is machine bearings.

Babcock Test

A standard test procedure to analyze wiredrawing or rolling coolants for their chemical content. It provides readings for the strength of solution as well as oil and other foreign content.
