The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Upending Test

See Upsetting Test.

Uplift Roller

A small pulley above a traveler to keep a conductor from lifting out of the traveler. For example, on a wire traversing unit for a spooler.

Upset Burr

A burr created by the flow of metal during a butt-welding of rod.

Upset Pressure

Pressure used during the butt-welding cycle to ensure a good weld with both ends of the material.

Upsetting

1) A metal working operation similar to forging. 2) The process of axial flow under axial compression of metal, as in forming heads on rivets by flattening the end of a wire.

Upsetting Test

A test for the detection of surface defects in rod and wire. A small sample is cut, then loaded in compression along the longitudinal axis. The resulting barrel-shaped sample will exaggerate surface imperfections, making them visible to the unaided eye. This test is particularly useful for severe forming or heading applications. Also known as the Upset or Upending Test.

URC

Designation for weatherproof wire.

URD

Designation for underground rural distribution.

Urethane

See Polyurethane.

USE

Designation for underground service entrance cable, 75°C (167°F) wet locations.

USE Cables

Designation for cables suitable for service entrance underground installation. They are available as a single conductor, multiple conductor and multiple conductor with an outer jacket. USE cable with an outer jacket can be installed as type SE Cable.

USE-2

Designation for cables similar to USE except it has a 90°C (194°F) wet rating.

UTP

Designation for Unshielded Twisted Pair, a cable construction consisting of four pairs of small gauge copper identified by color-coded insulation, per ANSI/TIA/ EIA standards.

UTS

See Ultimate Tensile Strength.
