The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Integrator

Any device producing an output proportionate to the integral of one variable with respect to a second variable, that usually being time.

Interaxial Spacing

Center to center conductor spacing.

Interbuilding

Between buildings.

Intercalated Tapes

Two or more tapes, generally of different composition, applied simultaneously in such a manner that a portion of each tape overlies a portion of the other tape.

Intercept Method

A quantitative metallographic technique in which the desired quantity such as grain size or amount of precipitate is expressed as the number of times per unit length of a straight line a metallographic image crosses particles of the feature being measured.

Intercom Wire

Wire used to connect communications instruments, telephones, telegraph, etc.

Interconnect

A connection scheme that provides for the direct connection of individual cables to another cable or to an equipment cable without a patch cord.

Interconnected System

Operating with two or more power systems connected through tie lines.

Interconnecting Cable

The wiring between modules, between units, or the larger portions of a system.

Interconnecting Wire

The physical wiring between components (outside a module) between modules, between units or between larger portions of a system or systems.

Interconnection

Mechanically joining devices together to complete an electrical circuit.

Interface

A shared boundary of phases, bodies, or spaces. The two surfaces on the contact side of both halves of a multiple-contact connector that face each other when the connector is assembled. In fiber optics the surface where two materials meet, as in core-cladding interface, or fiber-to-fiber interface in a connector.

Interference

Any undesirable electromagnetic emission or any electrical or electromagnetic disturbance, phenomenon, signal or emission, man-made or natural, that causes (or can cause) an undesired response, malfunctioning, or degradation of the electrical performance of electrical and electronic equipment.

Intergranular Corrosion

A type of corrosion that progresses preferentially along the grain boundaries, usually because the grain boundary regions contain material anodic to the central regions of the grain.

Interlock

A safety device to ensure that a piece of apparatus will not operate until certain conditions have been satisfied.

Interlocked Armor

Intermediate Cross-connect

A cross-connect between 1st level and 2nd level backbone cabling.

Intermediate Stands

Term used to describe the center stands of a rolling mill that is preceded by roughing stands and followed by finishing stands.

Internal Diameter

The diameter of some internal part or composite of a cylindrical object.
