The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Drill Pipe

A seamless pipe used in the drilling of an oil or gas well. It is the conduit between the wellhead motor and the drill bit.

Drilled Extrusion Ingot

A cast solid extrusion ingot that has been drilled to make it hollow.

Drive

The entire electrical and mechanical system used to supply mechanical energy to the input shaft of the gear reducer. This includes the motor, constant or variable speed belt system, flexible couplings, and starting equipment.

DRO

Designation for neoprene range and dryer cord (CSA).

Drop Forging

Forming metal, usually under impact, by compression within dies designed to produce the required shape. The term is ordinarily used synonymously with hot-die forging.

Drop Hammer

A forging machine that employs the impact resulting from the action of gravity, with or without added steam or air pressure on a falling ram.

Drop Wire

A telephone cable, usually consisting of one insulated telephone pair, which is used to connect a subscriber’s premises to open wire lines on poles.

Dross

Metal oxides formed in the molten state.

Drossing

Removal of dross from a galvanizing bath.

DRT

Designation for plastic range and dryer cord (CSA).

Drum

A cylindrical flanged barrel of uniform or tapering diameter on which rope or cable is wound for operation or storage. It may be smooth or grooved.

Drum Twister

Cable laying-up machines in which spools of wire are mounted on payoff stands that may or may not rotate and are taken up by a take-up drum carrier that rotates about its own axes. If required, a rotating caterpillar is used to pull the cable forward, producing a controlled lay or twisting action.

Dry Cyaniding

Synonymous with carbonitriding.

Dry Die

A term that describes lack of lubrication between drawn material and the die. The problem, which could be a poorly designed die, tunneling of the lubricant or kinks in the raw material, can cause transverse cracks or scratches and promote premature die fatigue/failure.

Dry Rolled Finish

The finish obtained by cold rolling on polished rolls without the use of any coolant or metal lubricant, of material previously plain pickled, giving a burnished appearance.

DSC

Designation for Double Silk Covered.

DSTA

Designation for Double Steel Tape Armored.

DTI

Designation for Double Thickness of Insulation: the sum of the thickness of the cotton or other insulation on the two sides of a conductor.

Dual Coaxial Cable

Two individually insulated conductors laid parallel or twisted and placed within an overhead or underground tube used for carrying shield and sheath.
