Die inspection

Does anyone know how to inspect the approach angle of a drawing die?

1.- Pull a copper piece of wire through the die to be mesured,the die angle can be mesured on the mark left on the copper wire.
2.- Put a silicon compaund on the face of the die to penetrate into the profile of the die. Allow the compaund to set and the remove it. The set silicon compound will show the profile of the die where the angle can be mesured.
3.- Use electronic body amplifier where angle and profile can be mesure amplified on the screen . This equipments can be bought on companies listed as dies and dies compunds that will be exhibiting in next INTERWIRE in Cleveland .
They are also shown on the wire journal or in the WJI Reference guide

Anayae hit all the ideas that most of us can do fairly easy. The easiest way to inspect die profiles is to purchase a conoptica die profile piece of equipment ( 90 second test and gives you the entire profile ). Not too much of us have 70,000 us dollars to purchase, but you may have the oppertunity to talk to your die manufacturer to help you with your quest.

You are right he did hit on most of the ways to check a die. And yes the conoptica die profile machine generally does a god job but like you say it also cost $70K. A thought which I am sure that the die manufacturers would hate is to have them certify their dies. They would then invest in something like the conoptica machine. there are one or two that do have them but that does not help those that repolish and or recut their own dies.

Conoptica people are nice to work with and can certainly offer plenty of advice.
