Descaling 1044/6mm rod down to 2.37mm at 18mps was created by Archived Forum Admin
Recently we have been successful in decsaling our 1044/6 rod down to 2.37mm in 9 drafts working within a delta value of 1.5 to 2.5, finishing at a speed of 18mps. We use a combination of calcium and sodium soaps to achieve good lubrication in line with a Decalub descaling system. We also incorporate paraloc die system and Wire Lab soap applicators. The rod is slighlty aged( a little rust), this performs well with no adverse effect. However, when we get in a new batch of 1044/6, we have a lot of premature die blow outs. We allow the rod to age a little , then descaling is again no issue. My question is, if there are any articals wriiten, that could explain the right rod conditions prior to descaling at high speeds.
We still have our pickling plant for now, but will look to eliminating this process soon.
Any assistance or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Axeman

It look the factor for different results is the carrier used, the aged rod helps to carry better the lubricants but on the mechanical decaling you must be applying a carrier elemnt, borax or others.
It is important to keep the carrier elemnt at the right temperature and concentration all the time in order to perform a good carrying action.
The machanical descaling manufacturers ( Wire Lab , Decalub , etc. ) have information about the type of scale and conditions of the rods to be descale.
A very import factor again is the carrier.

With decalub system, you should be very careful in lubricating. If your problem is descaling only, you should know there are different possible composition of scale. Some rod mill can supply wire rod specially made for mechanical descaling.

Arden, thanks for the comments, I will check the rod quality and see if the scale is correct for mechanical descaling, however, could you expand a little more on your first comment on being careful with lubrication when operating the Decalub system.

Decalub may give you detail suggestion in type of lubricant and lubricating operation.
The lubricating in Decalub system should be similar to PE extruding. It depend on pressure, temperature in the chamber and characteristics of lubricant. Sticky coating is good for wire drawing.
