Degassing

A term used during the processing of molten metals to describe the methods used to lower dissolved gases prior to the solidification of the metal. Example: for the aluminum alloying process, inert gases are introduced to cause the oxides within the material to group in clusters so they are large enough to be filtered out of a molten metal filter. The gas bubbles create a surface on which the clusters adhere and are trapped as they move through the filtering media.
