Magic? a very fine steel wire

Report by one engineer from a rope manufacturer.

He saw a magic thing one day in their 450mm, 7 blocks machine when 1.42mm/0.72%carbon steel wire was drawn to 1.3mm at the final pass. The speed is 200 meter per minute. When they found wire was disappear between final pass and spooler, they stop the machine and check. A 0.08mm wire was found on final block and spool! Super plasticity? That fine wire sample was sent to one professor and nothing was report again.

If we can repeat that process, how wonderful it will be?

For those not in the metric system, the final die diameter was 0.0559 inches but the wire on the final capstan and take up had a diameter of 0.0032 inches. That is quite an uncontrolled draw down without the wire breaking!

Please, confirm the finish size . The smallest wire size used in the industry is .2mm.

If it were .8mm not .08mm it would make sence for a normal draft.

Apparently, the wire stretched uncontrollably between the final die and the final capstan.

Diameter of the wire at the final die - 1.3 mm
Diameter of the wire on the final capstan and take up - 0.08 mm

Thus remarkable ductility.

OK! What is the length of 0.08mm. It may necking before wire break.
